Danoff, Leah: Tell Me a Story

Description: Leah Danoff specializes and writes stories for all ages. She has stories to encourage wigglers to giggle, stories to give teenagers chills and stories to make adults laugh or cry. Story themes can be requested to tailor to your special event! In addition, Leah also offers a one session workshop, "How To Be A Storyteller". Awarded the Title of SIR (Storyteller in Residence) by the Bartlett Public Library.

Availability: Leah storytells all over the Chicagoland area in the Spring, Summer and Fall.

Description: “Lights, Camera, Action!” Using books as mini-plays, Paddy creates a highly creative and energetically interactive presentation she calls, “Storyacting”. With over 25 years of experience in performing, Paddy uses a few props, costumes, and a variety of visual effects to make stories jump off the page and into the hearts of her audience. Preschoolers through elementary age children eagerly participate, and everyone gets involved. COLOR MY WORLD, Storyacting makes reading fun!

Murdock, Lee: Folk Songs of the Great Lakes Region & The Irish in America (and genealogy)

Lee Murdock has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories in the Great Lakes region. There is an amazing timelessness in this music. Great Lakes songs are made of hard work, hard-living, ships that go down and ships that come back. The music is grounded in the work-song tradition from the rugged days of lumberjacks and wooden sailing schooners. This concert, brimming with Illinois and regional history, can be adapted for young audiences, for adult programming and for all ages. Murdock has released 16 CDs and two books, including Lake Rhymes, Folk Songs of the Great Lakes Region.

Both traditional ballads and modern historical songs are featured in this illuminating presentation.
Also an excellent program for geneological societies, this program is rich in stories of family history.

Great Lakes Ghosts: Supernatural legends and spooky tales of ghost ships, haunted lighthouses and other unexplained phenomenon of the Great Lakes. Perfect for holiday or year-round. Lighthouse Legends: Like the great castles of Europe, there is an aura of mystery and romance surrounding the lighthouses on the inland seas. Lee’s songs and stories share the tragedy and the heroics, the isolation and the beauty of lighthouse lore and the U.S. Life Saving Service.

Shanta: Stories and Songs of African People

Description: From the moment she moves out onto the stage, Shanta encircles her audience in an unforgettable experience of African culture. Shanta's performance features not only stories, but also poetry, chants and the spellbinding sounds of musical instruments of African origin. Melding the work of her own creative spirit with African folktales and contemporary African-American perspectives, Shanta's stories are about empowerment, peace, healing and self-discovery and the many ways in which people attain them. Shanta is a nationally-known storyteller who blends traditional folktales, contemporary stories, and world instruments in exciting and inspiring presentations. She brings a unique blend of music and message to her stories. She has been performing since 1978, and has been a teller-in-residence at the National Storytelling Museum in Jonesborough, Tennessee and also a featured teller at the National Storytelling Festival. She was the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Grant, Parent’s Choice Silver Honor Award. She has an original story on permanent display as part of the Africa exhibit at the Brookfield Zoo, and has been a storytelling teacher and mentor for many years.

A World of Stories features music/stories from around the world. Susan’s friends (puppets) often accompany her for family performances of lively, participatory, multicultural tales "...told with grace, heard with pleasure" (Booklist). Susan's theatrical background, as well as her twenty years of experience, inform her tales with presence and passion, infusing her programs with themes such as caring for the environment, the importance of compassion, and the necessity of laughter. Whitham, Neil: Singer of Songs, Teller of Tales

Description: Neil has entertained a 1000 times for children over the last 20 years. Recent performances include the Harold Washington Library in each of the last two years and Wrigley Field (for the players’ children) last summer.
Neil’s two most popular shows are BIRDS AND FROGS, DINOSAURS AND DOGS, and THE REAL WILD WEST (with Nebraskan Neil in full Western “git-up.”)

Author Neil (2 books, 50 plus articles for adults) also has a WHERE IDEAS COME FROM show (of children‘s songs and stories.) In another show, Neil blends songs and anecdotes for ages 8 to 80 for GRANDPARENTS’ DAY.

Neil alternates his originals (children immersed in) with well-known favorites that children can sing at the mics.

Other: THINGS NOT TO BE AFRAID OF featuring his “sound effect play” VamCRIER. Also: fun PATRIOTIC-HISTORICAL, and most holidays.

Availability: Seven days/week, day or evening.

I have an excellent program of the Music of the Civil War that can enhance your library's programming for the Civil War anniversary from April, 2011, through April, 2015. The hammered dulcimer was popular in the United States during the Civil War, and music of that era seems right at home played on this unique instrument. Many tunes and songs in this program are still familiar today, such as The Girl I Left Behind Me; When Johnny Comes Marching Home; Home, Sweet, Home; The Battle Hymn of the Republic; and Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, the Boys are Marching. Others, such as Lorena; Lincoln and Liberty; The Battle Cry of Freedom; The Marching Song of the First Arkansas Regiment (African Descent); Shiloh Hill; Paddy's Lamentation; and John Brown's Dream are less familiar but just as beautiful, rousing, and inspiring. This is a fascinating program of historical music.

Library patrons and staff alike react with delight and enthusiasm to the mix of music and information in my programs. Description: Based on Linda’s CD, Come and Go with Me (recommended in ALA Booklist, August, 2007), Linda delights children and adults alike with interactive songs within the folk tradition. Audiences hear the sounds of frog guiros for a Puerto Rican song “El Coqui”; sing along to “Walking through the Jungle” as Linda plays an African jembe drum; clap and dance to “Old Joe Clarke”; and move with abandonment to a fun version of “Monkeys on the Bed”. Linda’s spontaneity, excitement and joyful voice engage everyone, transporting them to a land of music and imagination. In addition, James Warner can accompany Linda with folk percussion instruments (cajon, dunduns, shekere, bodhran). Each instrument is demonstrated and discussed, and children can try them out at the end of the show. Great for including the older children in the family. Fees: $780-$1080 Mileage & Lodging included. Grants available from The Performing Arts Fund of Arts Midwest. Some organizations use drug free monies or anti-bullying grants.

Equipment: Needs 10' X 10' space and electrical outlet. Provides everything including classroom discussion questions, sound system and promotional materials.

Description:   As soon as he enters the room, Mr. Taps’ engaging personality and fancy footwork entrances audiences. Ayrie King III, better known as “Mr. Taps”, effortlessly glides across the floor as he demonstrates different styles of tap dancing, from the hip hop moves of Savion Glover to Fred Astaire’s innovative flair.

Mr. Taps’ charming, high-energy performance is wonderful entertainment for families and children. Not only is he entertaining to watch, but he strongly involves the audience, teaching them how to do some fancy footwork themselves. Mr. Taps has performed at schools, colleges, theatres and festivals throughout the U.S. Workshops and residencies are also available

Equipment: Dressing/Changing room, 2 handheld wireless microphones on stands, 4’x4’ table, 20’ area with 8’ ceiling clearance. The performer will furnish his own sound system. If amps or a system or sound person are available, it will be used.
